The number of Thoroughbred races run in North America declined 2.2% in 2008 as curtailed racing schedules in a number of states more than offset an increase of 674 races in Pennsylvania. The increase in Pennsylvania is largely the result of an expanded racing schedule at Presque Isle Downs, which ran its inaugural meet in 2007. States that offered at least 200 fewer races in 2008 than in 2007 were Michigan (-328 races), Illinois (-290 races), Ohio (-268 races), West Virginia (-256 races) and Florida (-217 races).
