Accounting for nearly half the dollar volume of the auction sales market, the yearling market is generally accepted as a true barometer of the health of the Thoroughbred breeding industry. Gross sales of yearlings tumbled 32.4% and average selling price fell 22.1% in 2009. Gross receipts and average price per yearling sold in 2009 were the lowest since 1997.
