Jay Hovdey and Byron King Join BloodHorse Editorial Team

Jay Hovdey, a multiple Eclipse Award winner and member of the Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, is returning to BloodHorse as a featured columnist commencing the week of Oct. 7, while veteran turf writer and handicapper Byron King has joined the BloodHorse staff as a reporter and associate editor.

The announcement was made by John Keitt, chief executive officer, publisher, and editorial director for BloodHorse.

“We are pleased to be able to share with our readers the insights of writers as accomplished as Jay and Byron across BloodHorse’s platforms,” Keitt said, referring to the weekly magazine, BloodHorse Daily, and bloodhorse.com. “Between their skills as writers and knowledge of the Thoroughbred industry, they are welcome additions to our team.”

Hovdey, formerly executive columnist with Daily Racing Form, was a correspondent for The Blood-Horse magazine from 1992 to 1998. He won the second of his five Eclipse Awards for his reporting on the 1994 Triple Crown series published in The Blood-Horse.

“This is a real homecoming,” Hovdey said. “I’m looking forward to again being part of the historic BloodHorse brand.”

Prior to joining BloodHorse, King was a longtime turf writer and handicapper with Daily Racing Form, where he was the on-site analyst at Churchill Downs for coverage of the Kentucky Derby, among other major races. King also served as on-air talent for the Eclipse Award-winning television coverage of the Kentucky Derby on Louisville’s WAVE3.

“I am delighted to have joined the editorial team at BloodHorse covering this fine sport,” King said. “It is a privilege to work alongside a staff I have long respected.”

Hovdey’s columns will be part of the on-line BloodHorse Daily content twice a week. In addition, his commentary will occupy the back page of BloodHorse magazine each week as “The Final Turn.” Both King and Hovdey will be part of the coverage team for BloodHorse at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park, Nov. 1-2.

BloodHorse has chronicled the Thoroughbred industry since 1916 and is dedicated to the improvement of Thoroughbred breeding and racing. BloodHorse produces widely distributed daily and weekly editorial content on Thoroughbred racing and breeding, including via its namesake weekly magazine, BloodHorse Daily, and social media platforms. The Jockey Club Information Systems Inc. purchased a majority interest in BloodHorse in February 2015, with the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association retaining the remaining ownership interest.
