“The committees that arose from the Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit have accomplished a great deal over the past few months,” said Ed Bowen, president, Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, which, along with The Jockey Club, organized and underwrote the summit. “We want to share those accomplishments and other pertinent information about racehorse safety with the industry, and our website is the perfect outlet for that.”

Committees meet regularly to discuss updates in research and development and to implement action plans and strategies.

Among the accomplishments to date are the creation of an equine on-track injury reporting system; the creation of a uniform on-track injury reporting form, which is in use at more than 60 tracks; the development of a model rule banning toe grabs greater than 4 mm, which was adopted at the RCI Convention in April 2007; the development of durability statistics and indices; and the drafting of a national trainer exam.

The Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit was held at Keeneland on October 16 and 17, 2006.

Since 1983, the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has underwritten 230 projects at 32 universities for more than $14 million.
