Wagering Integrity & Technology Among Topics for 51st Round Table Conference

The vital areas of wagering integrity, technology and medication will be spotlighted when The Jockey Club hosts the 51st annual Round Table Conference on Matters Pertaining to Racing at the Gideon Putnam Hotel and Conference Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Sunday, August 17.

Former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, Chairman and CEO of Giuliani Partners, will close the second half of the program with remarks focusing on the Wagering Technology Working Group’s report and the issue of electronic security.

Giuliani Partners and Ernst & Young were retained last fall by the Wagering Integrity Alliance, which was formed by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) to manage and oversee the racing industry’s review of its electronic wagering systems in the wake of the Breeders’ Cup Ultra Pick Six incident on Oct. 26, 2002.

Preceding Mr. Giuliani will be a series of reports from several members of the Wagering Technology Working Group. Among the scheduled speakers are NTRA deputy commissioner Greg Avioli, who will present a summary of the report itself; noted handicapper Jim Quinn, who will provide the horseplayers’ perspective of the report and its recommendations; and California Horse Racing Board chairman Roger Licht, who will provide a regulator’s perspective.

The application of leading edge technology in racing will be the focus of remarks by Jockey Club president Alan Marzelli and InCompass president David Haydon, who will describe InCompass’ new Race Track Operations system that provides a unified approach to the management of data and technology at the racetrack.

In addition, D.G. Van Clief, Jr., chairman of the Racing and Medication Testing Consortium, and Lonny Powell, president of the Association of Racing Commissioners International, will discuss the consortium’s ongoing effort to establish a national uniform medication policy.

The Conference will open with the traditional welcome by Ogden Mills Phipps, chairman of The Jockey Club, followed by a “Report of the Activities of The Jockey Club,” presented by Dan Fick, executive vice president & executive director of The Jockey Club, and an “NTRA Report to the Round Table,” delivered by NTRA commissioner and CEO Tim Smith.

A transcript and audio replay of The Jockey Club Round Table Conference will be available on The Jockey Club web site a few days after the event. The web site is located at www.jockeyclub.com.

The Jockey Club Round Table Conference was first held on July 1, 1953 in The Jockey Club office in New York City. The following year, it was moved to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. where it has been held every August since.
