Equibase Releases Lists of North America's Top Trainers, Jockeys, Owners & Horses in 2002

Robert Frankel, Jerry Bailey and Stronach Stable head the individual lists of the top 100 jockeys, trainers and owners respectively by North American earnings in 2002, according to final statistics released today by Equibase Company LLC, the Thoroughbred industry’s Official database for racing information and statistics.

War Emblem led all Thoroughbreds with 2002 North American earnings of $3,455,000. Following War Emblem was Volponi with earnings of $2,389,200, and Medaglia d’Oro with $2,260,600.

The year-end compilations encompass all Thoroughbred racing in North America. The top 100 North American leaders in each category for 2002 are accessible through www.equibase.com, as are a second set of “international” leader lists which include the results of the 10 races of the World Series Racing Championships contested outside North America. Including these international earnings, Street Cry (IRE) was the leading Thoroughbred while Godolphin Racing, Inc. topped the list of leading owners. Frankel and Bailey remained atop the trainer and jockey standings.

In North America during 2002, Robert Frankel saddled 117 winners from 478 starters to pace all trainers with earnings of $17,739,940. Bob Baffert finished second with 133 wins from 683 starters and earnings of $12,017,635.

Completing the top 10 trainers were: Steven Asmussen, $10,237,910 (406/1,809); Todd Pletcher, $8,702,228 (147/698); Scott Lake, $8,270,304 (397/1,783); William Mott, $7,496,315 (148/708); Ken McPeek, $6,643,679 (81/466); D. Wayne Lukas, $5,996,362 (82/473); Jerry Hollendorfer, $5,893,210 (264/1,115); and Mark Hennig, $5,814,441 (79/478).

Jerry Bailey established a new North American earnings mark for jockeys with $19,220,701, besting the mark he set in 2001 by $204,981. Bailey rode 211 winners from 829 mounts. Edgar Prado finished second, with 289 wins from 1,523 mounts and earnings of $18,020,819.

Rounding out the list of top 10 jockeys were: John Velasquez, $16,361,445 (289 wins/1,393 mounts); Pat Day, $15,904,396 (258/1,155); Jorge Chavez, $13,703,554 (222/1,193); Victor Espinoza, $12,523,010 (187/1,136); Patrick Valenzuela, $12,525,218 (221/1,289); Alex Solis, $12,027,315 (217/1,123); Jose Santos, $11,916,548 (176/1,159); and Kent Desormeaux, $11,622,407 (159/971).

Stronach Stable topped the North American leading owners list with 122 wins from 651 starts and earnings of $8,317,883. Runner-up was The Thoroughbred Corporation whose horses won 69 races from 307 starts for earnings of $7,829,755.

Rounding out the list of the top 10 owners were: Richard Englander, $7,464,476 (276/1,583); Michael Gill, $5,585,328 (226/1,401); Juddmonte Farms, Inc., $5,120,087 (40/151); Edward P. Evans, $4,467,427 (52/237); Sam-Son Farms, $4,003,749 (46/201); Gary Tanaka, $4,001,101 (17/148); Edmund Gann, $3,956,550 (18/82); and John Franks, $3,888,576 (150/936).

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Equibase leader lists are published as a service to the industry and their compilation is consistent with years past. As has been the industry standard for decades, including prior to the formation of Equibase, Canadian dollars are not converted to American dollars. There remains no industry consensus concerning the conversion of Canadian dollars to American dollars and until such time, Equibase will continue to compile and publish leader lists in the historically accepted manner. It is worth noting that 2002’s leading owner, Stronach Stable, had earnings of $8,317,883. Of this amount, $3,888,814 was earned in Canada.
