Equibase Releases Final Lists of Top Trainers, Jockeys, Owners & Horses in 2006

Todd Pletcher, Garrett Gomez and Darley Stable head the individual lists of the top 100 trainers, jockeys and owners, respectively, by North American earnings in 2006, according to final statistics released today by Equibase Company LLC, the Thoroughbred industry’s official database for racing information.

Pletcher shattered his own North American earnings record set in 2005 in heading the leading trainers list for the third consecutive year while Gomez and Darley Stable are first-time winners.

Invasor (ARG) led all Thoroughbreds with 2006 North American earnings of $3,690,000. Following Invasor (ARG) was Bernardini with $3,060,480 and Lava Man with $2,770,000.

The year-end compilations, distributed each year by Equibase, include results from Thoroughbred racing in North America only. The top 100 North American leaders in each category are accessible through http://www.equibase.com.

During 2006, Pletcher-trained horses won 294 races from 1,168 starts, for earnings of $26,820,243, breaking the North American earnings mark of $20,867,842 he set in 2005. Doug O’Neill finished second with earnings of $11,247,756 from 163 wins and 968 starts.

Rounding out the list of top 10 trainers by North American earnings in 2006 were: Robert Frankel, $9,786,673 (139 wins/585 starts); Scott Lake, $9,565,656 (528/2,158); Kiaran McLaughlin, $8,499,166 (80/406); Bob Baffert, $8,136,567 (91/392); Richard Dutrow Jr., $7,844,557 (156/686); William Mott, $7,831,106 (120/640); Steven Asmussen, $7,715,373 (241/1,141); and Scott Blasi, $6,717,636 (198/998).

Garrett Gomez headed the 2006 North American leading jockeys’ list with earnings of $20,122,592. Gomez rode the winners of 261 races from 1,270 mounts. Edgar Prado finished second with 248 victories from 1,303 mounts and earnings of $19,765,013.

Completing the list of top 10 jockeys by North American earnings in 2006 were: Victor Espinoza, $16,138,004 (259 wins/1,285 mounts); John Velazquez, $15,562,754 (218/944); Ramon Dominguez, $14,409,988 (385/1,417); Corey Nakatani, $13,601,910 (145/735); Eibar Coa, $12,744,412 (321/1,612); Julien Leparoux, $12,491,316 (403/1,740); Cornelio Velasquez, $12,393,715 (237/1,519); and Rafael Bejarano, $12,369,078 (275/1,481).

Darley Stable runners won 63 races from 293 starts and earned $6,449,822 in North America in 2006 to lead all owners. Runner-up was Live Oak Plantation, whose color-bearers won 59 races from 244 starts and earned $5,263,594.

Rounding out the list of top 10 owners by North American earnings in 2006 were: Shadwell Stable, $5,084,218 (22 wins/133 starts); Stronach Stables, $4,765,089 (114/470); Lael Stables, $4,333,045 (28/109); Maggi Moss, $3,956,619 (211/756); Melnyk Racing Stables, Inc., $3,809,389 (87/389); J. Paul Reddam, $3,793,967 (28/155); Frank Carl Calabrese, $3,227,507 (128/388); and Robert L. Cole, Jr., $3,143,922 (190/456).

In addition to the official North American racing leaders’ lists available on http://www.equibase.com, Equibase also provides a second set of leaders’ lists that includes the results of the Dubai World Cup card from March 25 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. Including these international earnings, Godolphin Racing LLC was the leading owner with earnings of $6,509,513. Todd Pletcher remained the leading trainer with earnings of $27,670,243, Garrett Gomez the leading jockey with earnings of $21,922,592 and Invasor (ARG) the leading Thoroughbred with earnings of $3,790,000.
