OwnerView Webinar Covers Throat Surgery in Horses

The sixth installment in the 2024 OwnerView webinar series was held on August 6 and showed the importance of a clear airway in racehorses through discussion, slides, and a pre-recorded throat surgery.

The conference is hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Stoll Keenon Ogden, and The Green Group. The panel was sponsored by Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital.

A Q&A was sponsored by West Point Thoroughbreds, and attendees were able to ask questions through a Q&A link, which were then answered at the end of the webinar.

Gary Falter, the project manager for OwnerView, moderated the panel with guest Dr. Rolf Embertson, a founding partner, shareholder, and surgeon at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital.

The webinar started with Dr. Embertson explaining some of the common throat problems in Thoroughbred racehorses. He then went into detail about those issues and how they affect horses, how they are perceived at the sales, and their effects on racing.

“If you are looking at it from the standpoint as if your client is trying to buy a horse that’s going to race, and not resell, then you are much more willing to take a chance on that horse,” he said.

The webinar also detailed the importance of a tieback procedure, a surgical technique that creates a larger airway for the horse to improve airflow and prevent breathing difficulties, which is especially important in equine athletes.

“Our thanks to Dr. Embertson for sharing his vast knowledge with our audience,” Falter said. “Having access to top-level medical expertise is a benefit to all Thoroughbred owners.”
