Bell Appointed to Equibase Management Committee

Gatewood Bell, the vice president of racing for Keeneland, has been appointed to serve on the Management Committee of Equibase Company LLC, it was announced today by Equibase Company Chairman Ian D. Highet.

A third-generation horseman, Bell founded Cromwell Bloodstock, a full-service bloodstock agency and consulting firm in 2011 and served as its president for a decade prior to joining Keeneland. Bell has been a member of The Jockey Club since 2020 and also serves as a member of the Breeders’ Cup. He previously served on the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

“Gatewood brings a unique skillset with his background and current role at Keeneland,” Highet said. “We look forward to his sharing his extensive knowledge from both his personal and professional involvement in the Thoroughbred industry to the committee.”

“I love the industry and have been lucky to have been involved in many aspects of it, including as a
racehorse owner,” Bell said. “Equibase is vital to our industry, and I look forward to working with the other committee members and contributing to this mission.”

Bell fills a board seat being vacated by James L. Gagliano, the president and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club, who joined the Equibase Management Committee as a representative of The Jockey Club in 2007.

The Equibase Management Committee is composed of members from the company’s two general partners – The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America (TRA). The TRA representatives are Peter Berube, Happy Broadbent, Christopher McErlean, David O’Rourke, Mike Rogers, and Josh Rubinstein. Besides Highet and Bell, The Jockey Club representatives are C. Steven Duncker, Louis A. Cella, Stuart S. Janney III, and Nick Nicholson.

Equibase Company is a partnership between subsidiaries of The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America and serves as the Thoroughbred industry’s official database.
