The Jockey Club maintains a longstanding and growing commitment to enhance the welfare and safety of Thoroughbreds when their racing and breeding careers have ended. In addition to the programs below, $25 of nearly all registry-related transactions is allocated to Thoroughbred aftercare.

The Jockey Club's checkoff program enables owners and breeders to financially assist five charities by selecting one of the designated amounts or an amount of their choice on the Application for Foal Registration form or during the payment process on Interactive Registration.

The non-profit Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredits, inspects and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retire, retrain and rehome Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding.

Thoroughbred Connect is a free online service designed to assist with placement of Thoroughbreds following the conclusion of their racing or breeding careers. Those interested in providing assistance or aftercare can attach their name and contact information to the electronic records of Thoroughbreds within The Jockey Club’s database.

To encourage the retraining of Thoroughbreds into other disciplines upon completion of careers in racing or breeding, the Thoroughbred Incentive Program offers sponsorship for Thoroughbred-only classes and divisions, high point Thoroughbred awards at open horse shows and competitions, a Thoroughbred of the Year Award and a Young Rider of the Year Award.
